Session Notes - November 12, 2009 Session

This session marked the fourteenth week of NASPA Club #565's 2009-2010 season!

There were no games played in our recreational division this week.

In the Tournament session, we were joined by 8 tournament division players who played 44 games in which we scored 16,272 points for a 369.8182 points per game average. Of the 51 recorded bingos we played, five were phonies that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors for the week, going 6-0 with a positive 804 pt spread, 17 bingos, and a per game average of 450.3 pts per game.

We featured two regular contests this week

The first regular contest was the Power Play Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the five high point tiles "J", "K", "Q", "X", and "Z" somewhere within it. Mickey Matz trotted out QUA in the capacity of his entry for 39 pts, Ed Saunders was up on the roof working with his ZAX for 56 pts, Travis Carlson was in his presidential mode playing the VETO/TAX combination for 58, Jason Sommer was chowin'down on some ZITI for 68 pts, but Sarah Jacobson got the best of all the guys, swinging her SKIRTER out on the board for 100 pts and the $6.00 prize.

The second regular contest was the You Animal!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of an animal or type of animal other than a bird. Sarah Jacobson scored 17 with her OXEN, Travis Carlson submitted overDOES for 59 (though he also had COATIes* for 67 and rAIsing for 72 - an AI being a three-toed sloth), Ed Saunders was also feeling a bit slothful, winning the $6.00 prize with his 78 pt play of detAIned.

Sarah Jacobson and Jason Sommer laid a hit on the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot this week, Sarah scoring 100 even on the aforementioned SKIRTER and Jason showing his creative side with the 106 pt phony measily*. Sarah and Jason split the $3.18 prize.

Ed's $6.00 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.50 added to it. We have paid out a total of $222.29 in prizes during the 2009-2010 season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (November 19, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• "NL" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "NL", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. SUNLIGHT, LINNETS, LORGNONS, LINOLOOL, OENOLOGY, LOLLING, FENNELS, JARGONEL, etc.)
• This One's For The Birds Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a bird or type of type of bird. (e.g. APTERYX, HOACTZIN, LIMPKINS WHIMBREL, LINNETS, ORTOLAN, CACIQUE, OXPECKER, PTARMIGAN, NUTHATCH, TITMOUSE, COCHINS, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.18 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $1.50 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $7.66 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
