Session Notes - March 11, 2010 Session

This session marked the twenty-eighth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 10 players who played 62 games in which we scored 22,273 points for a 359.2419 point-per-game average. Of the 54 recorded bingos we played, 2 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Lewis Saul took top honors this week, going 6-0 with a positive 779 pt spread, 11 bingos and a 432.5 pt per game average.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Dad GUM It!!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that includes the letters "G", "U", and "M", in any order, somewhere within it. Ed Saunders filled his MUG with 12 points, but Naurlene Canterman planted her flag to claim this $7.50 prize, scoring 27 with FLAG/GUM.

The second was the Here, Fishy, Fishy!!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a fish or other underwater animal. Naurlene Canterman played a 25 point COD, Ed Saunders scored 52 with his play of ZAMIA (AMIA being another name for the Bowfin or Dogfish), Lewis Saul scored 73 with his SHADing play, but Travis Carlson reeled in the big winner when he hooked his JUDOIST onto ZAMIA to make JUDOIST/ZAMIAS for 76 pts and the $7.50 catch of the day.

Three players took dead aim on the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot, splitting the $1.87 pot were Namoli Brennet with 118 pts for naziism* ($0.63), Naurlene Canterman with 109 pts for GATHERED ($0.62) and Lewis Saul with 101 pts for INQUIRES ($0.62).

Lewis Saul also went long tonight, tacking CENTIVE on the end of an existing "IN" to snag the $7.11 prize in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot with his 83 pt play of INCENTIVE.

No one cashed in on either of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.87 shall be added to each. We have paid out $488.81 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The regular weekly contest ideas for the March 18th session were submitted by Travis Carlson. If you have contest ideas or past favorites, let me know and we'll try to work them into the mix .

The next session (March 18, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
• Captain Hook Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play containing at least three "hooks" (creates at least three new words in addition to the main word).
• A Contest. . .And All That Jazz - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a musical instrument, genre, or performer. (e.g. VIRTUOSO, MANDOLIN, ZITHERS, BAROQUE, BELLies, FIDDLER, SAXonies, COUNTRY, VIOLence, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $5.61 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $10.11 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
