Session Notes - February 11, 2010 Session

This session marked the twenty-fourth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 8 players who played 56 games in which we scored 19,963 points for a 356.48 point-per-game average. Of the 58 recorded bingos we played, five were phonies that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors this week, going 4-0 with a positive 467 pt spread, 12 bingos and a 448.5 per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Gem Show Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a mineral, rock, or geological formation. Ed Saunders tossed out the basic GEM for 13 pts, Loren Mitchel covered that with 14 pts worth of GRAVEL, Sarah Jacobson got 25 pts for her GEMS, but Naurlene Canterman's 78 play of BEADIER wins the $6.00 prize.

The second was the Words Of Love Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that reflects the meaning of the Valentine's Day Holiday. Sorting through the myriad of entries for this contest, Ed came up with a list of 6 that looked at least somewhat plausible and passed them on to an impartial judge who narrowed it down to just two entries that met the criteria for the contest. Loren Mitchel scored 30 pts for his FLIRT play, but Travis Carlson wins the $6.00 prize for COURTERS (62 pts).

Ed Saunders knocked off the 9+ Bingo Progressive jackpot with retangled* for 73 pts. Ed played his phoney to the "ED" and had to backhook the "L" onto "FLORA" in order to make it work. Ed's play nets him $1.50

No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.50 shall be added to each. We have paid out $411.59 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

Next week's regular contests are provided by Travis Carlson. If you have an idea for a contest, or if you have a favorite contest or two from a past session, let me know and we'll see if we can work it back into a future session for you.

The next session (February 18, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
"E.G." Set An Example Contest (submitted by Travis Carlson)- A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "E" and "G", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. GHOULIE, ANTIGENE, THEGNLY, UPSTAGE, LIGAMENT, MANGROVE, HEXAGON, etc.)
Out Of This World Contest (submitted by Travis Carlson) - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word thatis, or contains somewhere within it, the name of something found in outer space. (e.g. STARfish, MARTIAN, MOONier, ALIENor, QUASARS, ASTEROID, SUNdial, GRAVITY, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.00 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.50 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $3.00 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
