Session Notes - April 8, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-second week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed and enjoyed the company of old friend Dan Byrne to the club from Lancaster, California. Dan visits us once every few years when he's in town and is always a welcome addition to the mix.

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 8 players who played 62 games in which we scored 22,027 points for a 355.2742 point-per-game average. Of the 53 recorded bingos we played, one was a phony that went unchallenged.

Monique Kornell took top honors this week, going 4-1 with a positive 125 pt spread.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Gotta Dance Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a dance. Naurlene Canterman did an 18 pt HULA, Ed Saunders tried a 22 pt JIG, but Travis Carlson elected to hook his bingo ELECTED onto the front end of LOGGERS to form ELECTED/CLOGGERS for 94 pts and the $6.00 prize.

The second was the No BS! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that does not include either a blank tile or an "S" tile. Sarah Jacobson scored 56 pts with EX, Naurlene Canterman took out a 66 pt RETAINER, Travis Carlson PAINTED a 76 pt entry, but Lewis Saul yearned for the $6.00 win and got it with his 80 pt play of YEARNED.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.50 shall be added to each. We have paid out $566.78 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (April 15, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
• Take Me For A Ride In Your Car Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, any car or land-based motor vehicle. (e.g. MUSTANG, IMPALAS, RAMBLER, SEQUOIA, GNASHING, CHEVIES, CENTURY, VOYAGER, HORIZON, FORDONE, HORNETS, HUMVEES, WOODIES, etc.).
• Feathered Friends Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a bird. (e.g. CURLEWS, SEAROBIN, WHIMBREL, PHOENIX, VERDINS, ORTOLANS, AVOCETS, LANNERET, THROSTLE, DUNLINS, WIDGEONS, DOTTEREL, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $1.50 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.50 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $17.23 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $3.00 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
