Session Notes - January 7, 2010 Session

This session marked the nineteenth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed Dorene Dunbar to the club for the first time. We thoroughly enjoyed her company and her play and look forward to seeing her at future club sessions.

Dorene Dunbar comprised our recreational division this week, playing only two recreational games against tournament division players before she bravely took the plunge into the tournament division on her own.

The tournament rules division was joined by 10 players who played 50 games in which we scored 17,817 points for a 356.3400 point-per-game average. Of the 55 recorded bingos we played, five were phonies that went unchallenged.

Travis Carlson took top honors this week, going 4-1 with a positive 413 pt spread as he continues his climb up the club ratings ladder.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Teeny Tiny Tournaments Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "T" the greatest number of times, anywhere within it. Richard Van Liere touted his 22 pt play of TOUT, Naurlene Canterman's Laotian ATT coin was worth 25 pts here, Monique Kornell was TWIXT and between for 30 pts, Karen Lundeen had her eye on the TARGETS for 66, Ed Saunders took a TIMEOUT for 78, but Travis Carlson scored 79 and the $6.75 prize with his SLOTTER play.

The second was the Baby New Year Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a baby or young animal. Travis Carlson was puttin' on the dog with his 21 pt play of PUP, Karen Lundeen scored 26 pts with KID, Naurlene Canterman reached into her pocket full of tricks and pulled out a JOEY for 32 pts, but Monique Kornell also has a pocket full of tricks and hers had more JOEYS and scored 46 to win the $6.75 prize.

Naurlene Canterman and Ed Saunders hit the century mark with separate 100+ pt plays. Naurlene, the coupon queen, is never one to SQUANDER (101 pts) the chance to win some money and she cashed in on a $2.90 share of the $5.79 100+ Play Progressive jackpot. Ed Saunders tipped his hat to that play and claimed the other $2.89 in the Jackpot with an even 100 pt play of FEDORAS.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.68 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $301.45 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (January 14, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Double "AA" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play which includes the two-letter word "AA" as a part of it. The separate and distinct play of the two-letter word must be a part of the play to qualify. One of the words formed must actually be the two-letter word "AA".
Who's In Charge Here? Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a person, figure, or position of authority (e.g. BARONET, BEYLICS, PASHADOM, MONARCHY, SAGAMORE, NIZAMATE, JACKpot, JARLDOM, LORDosis, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $10.47 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $8.79 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.68 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
