Session Notes - May 6, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-sixth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed new player Natalie McGee to club this week. A confessed "kitchen table" player, Natalie moved right into the tournament division and learned a lot about Scrabble that she didn't know before. We enjoyed her company and her willingness to learn and we hope to see her again soon and watch her progress in the weeks and years to come.

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 8 players who played 62 games in which we scored 22,613 points for a 364.7258 point-per-game average. Of the 68 recorded bingos we played, none were phonies that went unchallenged.

Loren Mitchel took top honors this week, going 4-1 with a +210 pt spread

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Golden Spike Contest for the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to connections or joinings of any sort. Travis Carlson went with his 73 pt REUNITE, Mickey Matz scored 80 with AGREEING, but Loren Mitchel ANNEXED (84) this $5.25 prize.

(Just a clarification for future "Pertaining To" type contests. . . .Your particular word must pertain DIRECTLY to the topic of the contest. For instance, just because the final connection in the first transcontinental railroad was made with the "Golden Spike", and there was probably a lot of SWEARING done in the process of building that railroad, it doesn't automatically follow that SWEARING, or anything else that might happen on a railroad, pertains directly to connections.)

The second was the "O,U" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that has either of the letter couplets "OU" or "UO" somewhere within it. Loren Mitchel set the stage for the next entry by playing LOUIE for 13 pts, Lewis Saul went out of the cities for 64 pts in the COUNTIES, Mickey Matz looked back to his restaurant days for RAGOUTS (67), Natalie McGee chimed in with OUTRAGES for 68, Naurlene Canterman scored roughly 70 pts for her play of ROUGHLY, but Sarah Jacobson gets to contemplate her $5.25 prize this week while she LOUNGES (83) by the pool.

Loren Mitchel claimed the $8.24 in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot this week. Loren laid down UNBRIDLED (DILNRU? rack played to the "ED") for 72 pts. The Computer Game also played a 9 letter bingo this week, scoring 67 pts for PROFANERS. The Computer Game graciously declined its $4.12 share of the prize payout, so it all went to Loren.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.31 shall be added to each. We have paid out $642.11 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session's (May 13th) contests were submitted by the renowned writing tandem of Janis Clem and Sarah Jacobson. Thanks to both.
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (May 13, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Girl's Names Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, a recognizable Girl's Name (e.g. VERONICA, ABIGAIL, MAUDlin, SARAband, PHOEBEs, TYRAmine, sucROSE, esCAROLe, antiDORA, ANGELICA sKIMpier, etc.)
Gettin' There Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a recognizable form or method of transportation (e.g. , catWALKS, TAXICAB, RICKSHAW, omniBUS, sawHORSE, FLYaway, seaTRAIN, CYCLING, bareBOAT, DOGCART, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $6.74 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
