Session Notes - August 6, 2009 Session

This session marked the first week of NASPA Club #565's 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed and greatly enjoyed the company of first-time club player Vernon Berry, who prepped for his first club session by playing five hours of Scrabble Thursday afternoon before the club met. We look forward to seeing him at future sessions and watching his progress through the year.

There were no games played in our Recreational Division this week.
Click here for a roster of Recreational Players

In the Tournament session, we were joined by 8 tournament division players who played 34 games in which we scored 12,336 points for a 362.8235 points per game average. Of the 42 recorded bingos we played, FIVE were phonies that went unchallenged.

Jason Sommer was the big winner this week, with huge games of 640 and 560 pts, a 462.8 point per game average and a spread of +627 pts in only 5 games.

Some numbers and whatnot for this tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week

The first regular contest was the A Brand New Start Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that directly pertains to a start or beginning of some sort. I originally thought that Loren Mitchel was the only one who picked up on this cue, playing CUE for 5 points and the payoff but, then came the DAWN, played for 16 pts by Mary Lou Van Liere, and in the sudden brightness of this revelation, I knew that I'd have to give the $5.25 prize to Mary Lou instead.

The second regular contest was the Clothes Make The Scrabble Player Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a piece or form of clothing. Jason Sommer played BOOTING but neglected to include a score for the play, Karen Lundeen scored 65 for CAPTIVES, Ed Saunders garnered 74 with his play of NASTIES, but Loren Mitchel went international to tally 76 for his play of TAMEINS (a garment worn by Burmese women) and the $5.25 prize.

Jason Sommer took a couple bites out of the Progressive Jackpots this week, netting $6.36 for his 104 pt play of DENSITY (100+Play Progressive Jackpot) and an additional $3.18 for his HUGE 640 pt game (Club 565 Progressiv Jackpot). Jason racked up five bingos en route to that 640 total (FERRIES, RESULTED, NATURISM, AERUGOS, and the highly plausible phony tripline*)

No one cashed in on either of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.31 added to it. We have paid out a total of $20.04 in prizes during the 2009-2010 season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (August 13, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
"Q" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "Q" somewhere within it (e.g. QIVIUTS, MBAQANGA, CAZIQUE, REEQUIPS, QUERIDAS, EQUISETA, QUOINED, ALIQUOTS, TURQUOIS, PULQUES, etc.)
You Animal! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, an animal of some sort (e.g. KOUPREYS, ZEBRASS, AXOLOTL, TUATERA, COYDOGS, RINGTAIL, LEMURoid, BONOBOS, MACAQUES, MURINES, CHIPMUCK, URODELES, DASYURE, MUDPUPPY, OUISTITI, BOSHBOK, MARGAYS, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.18 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.43 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
