Session Notes - May 7, 2009 Session

This session marked the thirty-sixth week of NSA Club #565's 2008-2009 season!

We welcomed and enjoyed the company and strong play of Joel Horn, in town on business from Reading, Massachusetts. Joel took full advantage of our hospitality, winning all of his games and $1.49 by cracking our 9+Bingo Progressive Jackpot (admittedly small this week). We're hoping Joel will be in town long enough to join us at the Northwest Club on Sunday as well.

No games were played in the Recreational Division this week.

In the Tournament session, we were joined by 4 tournament division players who played 16 games in which we scored 6,282 points for a 392.6250 points per game average. Of the 25 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.

Joel Horn showed that he was fully attuned to the important things in life, scoring 23 pts with his timely and highly pertinent play of MOM. Happy Mother's Day to all the Mothers out there in Scrabble Land. None of us would be here without you.

We featured two regular contests this week

The first regular contest was the Communications Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, a form or method of communication. Loren Mitchel meditated on the words of the POETESS for 18 pts, Sarah Jacobson listened to some RAI (a form of Algerian music) to the tune of 22 pts, Joel Horn heeded some good ADVICES to score 78, and Ed Saunders wins the $2.25 prize with 85 pts as he REORDERS a new set of tiles for his rack.

The second regular contest was the Starts With "W" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that begins with the letter "W". Ed Saunders tested the waters with WATER for 32, Sarah Jacobson used the ripple effect to make some WAVES for 36, and Loren Mitchel managed a totally dry 42 pts to win the $2.25 prize with his play of WONK/OKA.

Joel Horn cracked the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot for $1.49 tonight, playing ORDINATES to the "ES" for 68 pts.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.56 added to it. We have paid out a total of $356.17 in prizes during the 2008-2009 season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (May 14, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• A Tribute To Youth Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some form of immature life form (e.g. LEVERET, POLLYWOG, LAMBKINS, PUPPIES, CHICKees, YEANLING, SILKWORM, NITwits, yEGGman, FILBERT, MINNOWS, etc.)
• "IC" A Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "IC", in that order, somewhere within it (e.g. KINESICS, ICEBLINK, MICKLEST, LOGICIAN, SYMBOLIC, LICORICE, PICKUPS, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $12.70 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $3.17 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $23.72 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
