| 1 | No Games This Week |
This session marked the fortieth week of NSA Club #565's 2008-2009 season!
In a classic mixture of the old and the new, we welcomed two old friends and one new player to the club this week.
Judith Whitcomb, one of the founders and first directors of our club, dropped by to donate some scrabble paraphernalia to the club for use as prizes in future Teeny Tinies. Though Judith no longer plays club or tournament Scrabble and couldn't stick around very long, Monique Kornell and I were happy to have had the opportunity to visit with her and catch up a little before she headed out for home. We hope she can come see us again and wish her all the best in the future.
Jason Sommer, one of the club's oldest friends who now lives in Solvang, CA but still has property here in Tucson, is in town fixing up his property and (hopefully) renting it out. He will be in town during the process and we hope to see him at both of our clubs during that span. We always welcome his brand of humor, his friendship, and his strong play when he's in town.
And last, but certainly not least, we welcomed new club player Kayla Peck to the fold. Kayla has played on the Internet Scrabble Club and is making her first foray into face-to-face competitive Scrabble. We enjoyed her company and were impressed with her play in her first club competition.
No games were played in the Recreational Division this week.

In the Tournament session, we were joined by 4 tournament division players who played 20 games in which we scored 7,488 points for a 374.4 points per game average. Of the 26 recorded bingos we played, none were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week
The first regular contest was the Gimme Candy Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some form of candy. Ed Saunders had a 38 pt MINT, Monique Kornell took a run at the prize with her play of RUNNERS/MARS, but Jason Sommer liked Ed's mint, so he reMINTed for 74 pts and a "sweet" $3.00 win.
The second regular contest was The Bird Is The Word Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some sort of bird. Ed Saunders made the token bird word, scoring 10 pts for TITle but Jason Sommer went international with gerMINA ( MINA being an alternate spelling of MYNAH) for 87 pts and feathered his nest with yet another $3.00 prize.
Kayla Peck passed up our "First Week Free" deal and paid the normal $3.00 dues along with a $2.00 donation to the club kitty. Thanks, Kayla!! It is appreciated.
No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. We have paid out a total of $379.42 in prizes during the 2008-2009 season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.
