This session marked the twelfth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!
We were joined by 6 players who played 12 games in which we scored 9,228 points for a 769 (384.5 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 32 recorded bingos we played, 3 were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
Some interesting bingos:
This was the fourth week of the "Special Letter Bingo Contest"
with "Y" being the "Special Letter"
for the week. Click
here for rules and current standings No points were scored this week
and Lewis Saul still leads by one slim point.
We also featured one repeat and two regular contests this session. The repeat
was the I Think I CAN Win This Contest for the highest scoring play of a
word containing the word "CAN" somewhere within it. Ed Saunders
made a "dogged" effort to win this contest, unleashing CANID
for 28 points. As there were no other entries, Ed dogtrots away with the
$4.00 prize.
The first regular contest was the Traveling The World Contest, awarded to
the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to any mode of transportation
anywhere in the world. We had four valid entries for this contest. Josh
Kassel submitted, "I drove across the US in a Honda ELEMENT."
for 77 points. Judith Whitcomb had two entries, "You need a VISA
to travel to most places nowadays." (36 pts) and "While crossing
the Continent in an ancient auto, I had to stop often for the purpose of
GREASING the axles." (80 pts) But Ed Saunders
had just a little higher octane (84 pts) with his entry of "The huge
TANKERS, bound for the lower 48, traveled southward
through the Gulf of Alaska with their cargoes of oil." and makes the
journey home with another $4.00 in his wallet.
The second regular contest was the That CANNOT Be a Word Contest for the
most outrageous acceptable (meaning - in the OWL) word played at club this
week. The entries:
Josh Kassel: GADI, LUV, QUEAN, ILIA, AGEE, JOTA, JARL, JUS, OOLITE, DURIAN
Lewis Saul: VELDT
Ed Saunders: PARDINE, WAW, SWIVE, SENNETS, YOD, JIAO, LATEEN, AIRTED, CANID,
OGEES
Judith Whitcomb: ZARFS, ROQUE, HINS, HAO, VAV
Bob Whitcomb: CONGEES, NORIA, FRAE, YUAN, VROUW, SONATINA, KURTA
A panel of judges from El Conquistador Country Club were shown a list of
all the words in no particular order with no definitions or information
on who might have played them. The voting (five votes each) by Amanda McConnell,
Dave McConnell, Nancy McLaughlin, and Terence Gerber resulted in a tie between
ZARFS and JIAO with three votes each. The remainder of the twenty votes
were spread out among HAO, VAV, VROUW, OOLITE, JARL, WAW, YOD, AIRTED, and
YUAN. Mike Roddy was called in to break the tie and was shown only the words
ZARFS and JIAO. Without any hesitation he said "That's easy. The second
one has too many vowels."
Ed Saunders wins the contest and yet another $4.00 with JIAO.
Thanks go out to Amanda, Dave, Nancy, Terence and Mike for their participation
in the judging.
The Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot fell again this week as Josh Kassel
found a "C" in a convenient place and made his mark with SCRIBING
for 158 points and the club's new high play of the season. Josh sews up
a $1.12 prize for his efforts.
No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall
have $1.12 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $160.56 in prizes
this season. Click
here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.
The next session (01 February) shall feature the following contests:
•Special Letter Bingo Contest - Week Five
- This week's "Special Letter" is "Z"
(see "Special Rule" in contest rules). Any Bingo beginning
with the letter "Z" will earn two points.
In addition, one point will be awarded for any bingo played that contains
the "Special Letter" but does not begin with it and one point
will be awarded for each additional occurrence of the "Special Letter"
within the word. Click
here for rules and current standings
•Melodies of Life Contest - On February 1,
1859, Victor Herbert was born in Dublin, Ireland. A prolific composer in
several different genres, he was most famous for his light and comic operettas
including Babes in Toyland and Naughty Marietta. In honor
of this event, a quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded
to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word pertaining
to any form of music, musical instruments, or music venues(e.g. OPERETTA,
ZYDECOS, YODELING, WALTZES, OBLIGATO, GITTERN, THEATRE, SHINDIG, BIRDSONG,
MARIMBA, ALTHORN, CHORAGUS, etc.). To qualify for this contest, you must
write a sentence clearly connecting your word to Music in some way. Make
the connection and you might be whistling "We're in the Money"
on your way home.
•Never OUT of Options Contest - A quarter of
dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns
in the highest scoring play of a word containing the letters O,U, and T
but NOT together in that order (e.g. RUBATOS,
OVERTURN, FAITOUR,
CORNUTO, OPUNTIA,
TOUCANS, ROUGHEST,
etc.) Words with the "OUT" unit intact will be tossed OUT.
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.12 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
