This session marked the twentieth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!
We are happy to pass along the news that Judith Whitcomb's hip replacement
surgery went well. We hope that the recovery period also goes well and,
while we don't really expect her to dance for us on the tables at Denny's
when she gets back, we'll be happy to see her moving around the scrabble
room more freely and comfortably than she has in the past. We look forward
to her return to club.
Old friend Allen Jacobson from Paonia , Colorado and newcomer Cecil MacPherson joined us this week. Allen in town for a couple of days and Cecil testing the waters of organized competitive scrabble after playing the game in Iraq and playing a little computer scrabble since returning to the states. We enjoyed their company and both are welcome here whenever they can make it.
We were joined by 5 players who played 11 games in which we scored 8,394 points for a 763.0909 (381.5455 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 27 recorded bingos we played, none was a phony that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
Some interesting bingos:
This was the twelfth week of the "Special Letter Bingo Contest"
with "P" being the "Special Letter"
for the week. Click
here for rules and current standings Monique Kornell made her presence
known with two "P" bingos and moves into a tie for second place.
Ed Saunders still maintains a 4 point lead.
We featured two regular contests and one repeat this week.
The first contest was the Take Me For a Ride in Your Car Contest for the
highest scoring play of a word that pertains to cars or activities involving
cars. Nobody was driven to enter this week so this contest will be taken
for a spin again next time. $2.50 awaits the driver of the winning entry.
The second contest was the "BE" The Verb Contest for the highest
scoring play of a verb utilizing the prefix "BE" as
a prefix. No entries were received for this contest either, so it
will "BE" coming back again next week as well. $2.50 will "BE"
in the pocket of a winner.
The repeat contest was the HMM? Does that "ING" Take an "S"?
Contest for the highest scoring play of a word
that can end in either "ING" or "INGS" with $1.75 in
WINNING/S awaiting a valid entry. Ed Saunders shored up his finances with
an 89 point play of "SHORINGS" and we
support his claim to the prize.
No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall
have $0.75 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $241.63 in prizes
this season. Click
here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.
The next session (29 March) shall feature the following contests:
•Special Letter Bingo Contest - Week thirteen
- This week's "Special Letter" is "H".
Any Bingo beginning with the letter "H"
will earn one point. In addition, one point will be awarded for each additional
occurrence of the "Special Letter" within the word. Click
here for rules and current standings
• Take Me For a Ride in Your Car Contest -
$2.50 shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play
of a word that pertains to cars or activities involving cars (e.g. SHOTGUN,

be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word

will "BE" disqualified.
• Sounds of Silence Contest - On March 29,
1848, an enormous ice dam formed at the source of the Niagara River on the
eastern shore of Lake Erie. Just after midnight, the thunderous sound of
water surging over the great falls at Niagara came to a halt. The eerie
silence persisted throughout the next day until the waters of Lake Erie
finally broke through the blockage and resumed their course down the river
and over the falls. In honor of this event, a quarter of dues collected
(less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word pertaining
to sounds or the means by which they are produced (e.g. CLANGOR, BURBLING,
CHIRRED, BANGING, DENTALS, SYMPHONY, THUNDER, BIRDSONG, TINKLED, WHISPER,
HOOFBEAT, LENITED, FOGHORN, MURMURS, HARMONY, SPIRANT, etc.) To qualify
for this contest, you need to write a sentence connecting your word to sound
in some manner. Make the connection and you might hear some change jangling
in your pocket.
•Not Your Reg-ULA-r Contest -A quarter of dues
collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns in the
highest scoring play of a word containing the letters U-L-A in a group of
