Wishing all of you the happiest and healthiest of Holiday Seasons!
This session marked the seventh of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!
It was "Ladies Night" at the club this thursday as the three women present compiled the only three winning records for the evening and finished in the top three spots in the weekly standings.
We again enjoyed the company of visitors Dan Byrne (Lancaster, CA) and Sandra Masel (Melbourne, Australia) and were joined by 7 players who played 19 games in which we scored 14,604 points for a 768.6316 (384.3158 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 43 recorded bingos we played, only one was a phony that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two contests this session. The first was the Hoover/Boulder
Dam Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that can be associated
with Boulders (or minerals of any kind) or Hoover (vacuums or anything used
in household cleaning). We had three valid entries for this contest.
Naurlene Canterman played DUSTING (73)- I'm DUSTING for the holiday parties
to clean up for guests.
Monique Kornell entered SNAKING (67) - It was a household emergency and
the plumbers were SNAKING out the drains at Josh's house for several days.
Ed Saunders submitted KAINITE (33) - Tests showed that the soil was low
in Phosphorus and Magnesium, so the Golf Course Superintendent added KAINITE
to his fertilizer to build up the mineral content of the soil before overseeding.
Naurlene wins with DUSTING for 73 points.
The second was the Happy Holidays Contest, awarded to the highest scoring
play of a word that can be associated with Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa.
Naurlene Canterman submitted three entries, GOY (26) - GOYs don't celebrate
Chanukkah, but do celebrate Christmas; REFUSER (70) A REFUSER is someone
who says no to gifts; and DEARIES (68) - The little DEARIES were snuggled
in their beds waiting for Santa.
Lewis Saul submitted a quote from Rush Limbaugh to justify his entry of
RETAKING (80) -"We are RETAKING Christmas back this year from the Liberal
Drive-By Media. . . ."
Putting on my black judge's robes, I eliminated REFUSER (because I didn't
feel that the sentence connected the word to any of the three holidays as
required by the rules) and RETAKING (because although the quote included
the word "Christmas", in my estimation, it was not ABOUT Christmas
at all. It was purely about politics and politics alone.)
Naurlene wins this prize with her "little DEARIES"
snuggled in their beds.
Naurlene takes home $10.50.
Bob Whitcomb played the club's second Triple-Triple this season and snagged
the $5.98 prize for the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot with the above-mentioned
CARRIERS, and, jeepers, Naurlene Canterman won
a lot of money this week, adding $3.55 to her winnings for the evening by
playing JEEPERS for 105 points and picking up
the 100+Play Progressive Jackpot prize.
No one cashed in on the other two Progressive Jackpots this week and each
shall have $1.31 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $115.98
in prizes this season. Click
here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.
The next session (28 December) shall feature the following contests:
•Endangered Species Contest - On December
28, 1973, President Richard Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act to provide
protection for endangered species and the ecosystems upon which they depend.
In honor of this occasion a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to
the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a species considered
to be endangered or extinct (e.g. CONDORS, JAGUARS, PUPFISH, DODO, DINOSAUR,
QUAGGAS, EOHIPPUS, KOUPREY) or of a word representative of a bygone era
in history (e.g. FLIVVER, FLAPPER, CAVEMAN, EOLITHS). If your word is "iffy",
include a sentence connecting your word to a past era in some way. Make
the connection and you might make some money.
•Happy New Year Contest - A quarter of dues
collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that pertains to the new year, its celebrations, its expectations,
whatever. . . .(e.g. RESOLVE, LANGSYNE, FOOTBALL, HANGOVER)
To qualify for this contest, you must use the word in a sentence that connects
the word to the new year in some way. Be creative and you might start your
new year with the prize.
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $14.57 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $11.14 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
