Session Notes - 18 January 2007 Session

This session marked the eleventh of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!

We were joined by 6 players who played 14 games in which we scored 10,946 points for a 781.8571 (390.9286 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 42 recorded bingos we played, only 1 was a phony that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:

Some interesting bingos:

This was the third week of the "Special Letter Bingo Contest" with "W" being the "Special Letter" for the week. Click here for rules and current standings Two players scored a total of three points, with Lewis Saul taking a slim one point lead over Karen Lundeen and Ed Saunders.

We also featured one repeat and two regular contests this session. The repeat was the Equal Rights Contest for the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to any Equal Rights or the pursuit thereof. We had two valid entries this week. Lewis Saul submitted "The EEOC BUSTLED with activity on the day that Lorraine was unjustly fired." (78 points). Ed Saunders wins it, though, with his 80 point submission of "In the 1960's, women ASSERTED their rights by burning their bras. Men noticed." Ed takes home $1.00 for his social awareness.

The first regular contest was the Intercollegiate Sports Contest, awarded to the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to any intercollegiate sport. We had five valid entries for this one (three of them from Judith Whitcomb). Lewis Saul submitted the most playful entry (After scoring 73 points in the final two minutes of the basketball game, the guard yelled out "WHOOPEE"!!!). However, his guard needed to score seventeen more points to beat out Judith's 89 point submission of "The cheerleaders were DRESSILY attired." (Everyone knows how important what the cheerleaders wear is to the world of Intercollegiate Sports. . . .). Josh Kassel submitted JITTERS for 86 points. Judith takes home $4.00 for her fashion acumen.

The second regular contest was the I Think I CAN Win This Contest for the highest scoring play of a word containing the word CAN somewhere within it. Nobody could win it this week, however, and it will run again next week with a $4.00 prize awaiting anyone who CAN win it.

The 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot fell again this week to a double onslaught by Bob Whitcomb (SOZINES for 104) and Ed Saunders (UPGAZED for 110). Bob and Ed will split the $1.12 prize.

Bob Whitcomb did win a prize all his own, though, picking up his second Triple-Triple of the young season. Sitting with a rack of ANTLERS, he watched Lewis Saul hang an "N" in the Triple Word Score line, saw the light, and laid down LANTERNS through the second "N" for 131 points. He takes home $3.73 for his effort.

No one cashed in on either of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.12 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $147.44 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.

The next session (25 January) shall feature the following contests:
Special Letter Bingo Contest - Week Four - This week's "Special Letter" is "Y". Any Bingo beginning with the letter "Y" will earn one point. In addition, one point will be awarded for each additional occurrence of the "Special Letter" within the word. Click here for rules and current standings
Traveling The World Contest - On January 25, 1890, New York World reporter Nellie Bly stepped off a train in New York after traveling around the world in 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes, and 14 seconds to prove that she could circle the globe in less time than Phileas T. Fogg's fictional record of 80 days. In honor of this event, a quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to any mode of travel used anywhere in the world (e.g. BALLOON, CAIQUES, SAMPANS, JETLINER, BIDARKA, DONKEYS, SCOOTER, RICKSHA, SKIJORING, TRIREME, etc.). To qualify for this contest, you must write a sentence clearly connecting your word to Travel in some way. Make the connection and you might be on your way to winning the prize.
That CANNOT Be a Word Contest - A quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns in the most outrageous acceptable (in the OWL) word of the night (e.g. GARDYLOO, NUNATAK, WATERZOOI, MBAQANGA, ZASTRUGI, AGALWOOD, GOSSYPOL, etc.). Contest will be judged by an impartial panel of my coworkers who look at my bingo list every friday and are constantly telling me "That CANNOT be a word." Enter early, enter often. Score doesn't matter, length doesn't matter. Weirdness is a definite plus.
I Think I CAN Win This Contest - A rerun of last week's contest. $4.00 shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the word CAN somewhere within it. (e.g. CANNOLI, ACANTHUS, OILCANS, CANOODLE, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $18.30 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $14.87 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
