Session Notes - 17 May 2007 Session

This session marked the twenty-eighth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!

This week we enjoyed the company of Honorary Member Yvonne Knickerbocker (visiting us from Bullhead City, AZ) and the Sonoran Science Academy team that represented Tucson very well at the National School Scrabble Championship in Providence, Rhode Island earlier this month. Kiara Low Dog, Richard Spence, team coach Kelly Fleming and Phyllis Spence (Richard's mom) all found their way to the club for the first time and Richard proceeded to make himself right at home, winning three of four games and taking top honors for this session. Kiara and Phyllis also got their first taste of NSA club play.

We were joined by 7 players who played 14 games in which we scored 10,063 points for a 718.7857 (359.3929 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 28 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:

Some interesting bingos:

This was the twentieth week of the "Special Letter Bingo Contest" with "F" being the "Special Letter" for the week. Click here for rules and current standings Richard Spence scored the only point this week. Ed Saunders holds a substantial lead with 6 weeks to go.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first regular contest was the Derby Day Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to the Kentucky Derby or horses in general. Monique Kornell wins this race with "The jockey RIDES the winning horse on Derby day." (25 points) A horse-savvy neighbor and myself decided that Lewis Saul's entry didn't connect his word to either horses or the Kentucky Derby so "The Kentucky Derby winner's trainer SAVORED their victory!" (86 points) was deemed to have been too long a stretch and never made it out of the starting gate. Monique runs away with $2.50.

The second regular contest was the "CON" Test Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that CONtains the word "CON" somewhere within it. Yvonne Knickerbocker turned in the only entry with CONED for 22 points and the $2.50 prize.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $289.49 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.

The next session (24 May) shall feature the following contests:
Special Letter Bingo Contest - Week twenty-one - This week's "Special Letter" is "O". Any Bingo beginning with the letter "O" will earn one point. In addition, one point will be awarded for each additional occurrence of the "Special Letter" within the word. Click here for rules and current standings
Warm Enough For You? Contest - On May 24, 1686, Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, inventor of the Fahrenheit temperature scale and mercury thermometer, was born in Danzig, Poland. In honor of this event, a quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to temperature (e.g. MERCURY, GLACIAL, TROPICAL, THERMAL, FEVERISH, COOLTHS, ICEBOAT, HOTSPOTS, etc.) . To qualify for this contest, you need to write a sentence connecting your word to temperature in some manner. Make the connection and you might have some cold cash jingling in your pocket.
What's A Mantra With You? Contest -A quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the mantra "OM" somewhere within it (e.g. OMICRON, COMPUTER, JARLDOM, LONESOME, CHROMIC, GLOMMED, TOMCATS, PROMOTE, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.36 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $3.36 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $8.22 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $3.92 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
