Session Notes - August 16, 2007 Session
This session marked the thirty-ninth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!
With the August 2nd session, we began play with our new format, incorporating a Recreational Division into the club structure. Recreational players will not be charged formal dues, but a $2.00 optional prize fee will be charged to those who choose to enter the weekly contests (Recreational and Tournament Contests will be separate and will vary). Tournament Rules Division players will continue to be charged $3.00 weekly dues to cover club expenses and fund weekly prizes as in the past.
We were joined by 3 tournament players who played 14 games. Of the 19 recorded
bingos we played, one was a phony that went unchallenged.
Anita Almond and Phyllis Spence comprised the recreational division at this
session.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
- High Game - 452 points by Richard Spence
- Low Win - 391 points by Richard Spence
- High Loss - 425 points by Richard Spence (Opponent at 426)
- Bingo King - Richard Spence for averaging 1.7500 bingos per game

- Triple-Triple Number Eight on the Season Richard Spence followed up last week's Triple-Triple of TREADING (131 pts) with a 149 point play of TAPERING this week. These were the seventh and eighth Triple-Triples of the season for Club # 565 and Richard's first two (he's only played 31 games thus far at club.) Congrats, Richard!
- Can I Sell Some Vowels Please, Pat? Richard Spence notes that in his first game against Ed Saunders, right after he played LATRINE for a bingo and 66 points, he drew the replacement rack of AEIIOU? (a normal scrabble occurrence. . . .). Rather than exchanging right away (like many people would), he managed to locate the potent vowel dump URAEI through the "R" in LATRINE for 10 pts, then drew RSST to his leave of IO?, and played STORIeS for 81 on the next turn. Nice find, nice play.
- Recreational Bingos I've noticed that some of the more interesting bingos since we opened up the club to recreational play have actually come in the recreational games. So. . . .I'm going to ask all players in the recreational games to keep track of their bingos so we can take note of and credit those plays.
- ROSEATE Redux Recently Monique Kornell told me that she thought of me every time she saw someone play the word ROSEATE. Having just played it again this week, I thought I'd do some research in our archives. Since bingo records have been kept in our club, the word ROSEATE has been played at club 6 times, 5 of those times by a certain Ed Saunders. I've also played ROSEATE 6 times in tournaments over the years. It's statistically one of the one thousand most probable bingos. Let's see that word show up on some other boards than mine.
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first regular contest was the Pilgrim's Pride Contest for the highest
scoring play of a word that pertains to the life and times of the early
American settlers. After a lot of thought and some discussion on the entries
in this contest, we're going to declare all entries invalid and run this
contest again. The time frame we have in mind is from 1620 (the Pilgrims)
through 1776 (the Declaration of Independence). This was the time of the
early American settlers.
$2.25 awaits a valid entry.
The second regular contest was the Take Me For a Ride Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of or for an automobile. Surprisingly to me, with the wide variety of words available for this contest, Richard Spence had the only entry (and drives away with the $2.25 prize) with ROD for 26 pts.
The Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot fell again this week. Richard Spence wins this for the second consecutive week with TAPERING for 149 points. (Last week it was TREADING for 131). Richard pulls in another $0.56 for this play.
No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.56 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $402.88 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.
The next session (23 August) shall feature the following contests:
• Pilgrim's Pride Contest - Repeat - On August
16, 1620, the Pilgrims set out from England on the Mayflower to settle in
America. In honor of this event, $2.25 shall be awarded to the highest scoring
play of a word that pertains to the life and times (1620-1776) of the early
American settlers. . . .(e.g. SAILING, HARDSHIP, VENISON, TURKEYS, WARRIORS,
SETTLER, PILGRIMS, WOODSMEN, CABINED, FRONTIER, etc.) . To qualify for this
contest, you need to write a sentence connecting your word to the life and
times of the early American settlers in some manner. If you can make the
connection, you might be thankful for your winnings.
•"Damn the Torpedoes!" Contest -On
August 23, 1864, Rear Admiral David G. Farragut issued his famous order
as the Union Navy captured Fort Morgan, Alabama and broke the Confederate
dominance of the ports of the Gulf of Mexico. A quarter of dues collected
shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of
a word that pertains to naval warfare. (e.g. TORPEDOS, TORPEDOES, GUNBOATS,
CRUISER, CANNONRY, IRONCLAD, WARSHIP, LANDINGS, SAILORS, GUNWALES, etc.).
To qualify for this contest, you need to write a sentence connecting your
word to naval warfare in some manner. If you can make the connection, you
just might sail away with the prize.
•Double "L" Contest -A quarter of
dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that contains the couplet "LL"
somewhere within it. (e.g. ALLEGRO, BELLMAN, SWILLING, UNROLLS, SEAGULL,
etc.).
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $0.56 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.98 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
