Session Notes - 15 March 2007 Session

This session marked the nineteenth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!

We'd like to take this opportunity to send our support and well-wishes to Judith Whitcomb, who will be having hip replacement surgery this week. We wish her a successful surgery, a quick, painless, and complete recovery, and a speedy return to the scrabble wars. We'll miss her while she's away.

We were happy to welcome Judy Carlock back to the club after a three-month hiatus. We were also happy to meet the reason for that hiatus. Her name is Abigail and she's a sweet, friendly, and energetic little dachshund puppy. To paraphrase a famous old song, "How you gonna keep 'em down at the club, after they've seen pu-ppies?"

Old scrabble pal Rex Kremer and his young son Remington also dropped by the club for a short visit. Unfortunately for us, Rex's one night out a week is spent with his bowling league (he recently put together a strong 259-212-238 - 709 series) rather than with us, but we may get him back for a few weeks during the summer months. Rex would like to say "Hi" to everybody but especially to the Whitcomb's who he won't get to see during the summer.

We were joined by 3 players who played 7 games in which we scored 5,554 points for a 793.4286 (396.7143 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 22 recorded bingos we played, only one was a phony that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:

Some interesting bingos:

This was the eleventh week of the "Special Letter Bingo Contest" with "J" being the "Special Letter" for the week. Click here for rules and current standings No points were scored this week and Ed Saunders maintains his four point lead.

We featured two contests this week.

The first contest was The Wild Coast of Maine Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to coastal waters, industries, cuisine, recreation, or the like. Ed Saunders submitted the only entry for this contest. "The rocky coastline greeted the onrushing surf like a giant ATOMISER, separating each crashing wave into a cool, refreshing mist of salt sea spray." (61 points). Ed heads out to sea with $1.75 in his pockets.

The second regular contest was the HMM? Does that "ING" Take an "S"? Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that can end in either "ING" or "INGS". Judy Carlock came up with tastings*, but, since the contest calls for a word that can legitimately end in either "ING" or "INGS", the entry was not valid and this contest will run again next week with $1.75 in WINNING/S awaiting a valid entry.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.56 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $239.88 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.

The next session (22 March) shall feature the following contests:
Special Letter Bingo Contest - Week twelve - This week's "Special Letter" is "P". Any Bingo beginning with the letter "P" will earn one point. In addition, one point will be awarded for each additional occurrence of the "Special Letter" within the word. Click here for rules and current standings
HMM? Does That "ING" Take an "S"? Contest - $1.75 shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that can end in either "ING" or "INGS" (e.g. BIRDING/S, SKIING/S, ERLKING/S, COVING/S, etc.) Either form will qualify.
Take Me For a Ride in Your Car Contest - On March 22, 1961, Raymond Loewy made a sketch of a futuristic sports car at the request of Sherwood Egbert, the recently appointed president of the ailing Studebaker Corporation. The "Avanti" was rushed into production in the spring of 1962. In honor of this event, a quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to cars or activities involving cars (e.g. RAMBLER, WOODIES, DRAGSTER, BEETLES, HORNETS, ROADKILL, FALCONS, MICROBUS, CRUISING, FLIVVER, HOTRODS, LANDAUS, ROADSTER, BACKSEAT, SHOTGUN, IMPALAS, MUSTANG, CORVETTE, RAGTOPS, etc.) To qualify for this contest, you need to write a sentence connecting your word to cars in some manner. Make the connection and you might win enough money for about half a tank of gas (at 1961 prices).
"BE" The Verb Contest -A quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a verb utilizing the prefix "BE" as a prefix (e.g. BEDAUBS, BELADIES, BESMIRCH, BERIMES, BEDIZEN, etc.) A verb such as BETTERED, which is merely a word that starts with "BE", will "BE" disqualified.
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $5.61 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $2.06 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $3.74 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $4.49 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
