This session marked the fifteenth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!
We enjoyed the company of Kevin Lewis, who played his first ever organized
scrabble session and impressed us all with his vocabulary and his quick
grasp of the game. We hope he'll become a regular and we're sure he'll be
a force to be reckoned with once he's familiar with the process and the
more expansive vocabulary that club and tournament players employ.
We were joined by 4 players who played 10 games in which we scored 7,560 points for a 756 (378 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 25 recorded bingos we played, 3 were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
Some interesting bingos:
This was the seventh week of the "Special Letter Bingo Contest"
with "E" being the "Special Letter"
for the week. Click
here for rules and current standings Once again the "Special Letter"
proved elusive and no points were scored this week. Lewis Saul still leads
the pack by one thin point.
The first regular contest was the Never Too Late For Love Contest, awarded
to the player who turned in the play, regardless of score, that best represents
the spirit of Valentine's Day. We had two valid entries for this contest.
Lewis Saul submitted: "A FEATURE of Valentine's
Day is the abundance of hearts and flowers." Ed Saunders chipped in
with "After partaking of the sumptuous Valentine's Day meal he had
prepared, her soft lips shimmered expectantly in the candlelight as he poured
her just a little more WINE." Monique
Kornell was called upon to judge the contest and , guys, there is a lesson
to be learned here. . . .forget about the alcohol and don't even THINK about
cooking. . . .it's hearts and flowers that win the hearts of fair ladies.
Lewis Saul cosies up to the $1.75 prize.
The second regular contest was the "Remember The Maine" Contest
for the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to any War or to any
aspect of warfare in general. Lewis Saul provided the only entry and blitzed
the field with his submission of "The war was the
LONGEST ever in U.S. history."(72 points) The club was forced
to surrender another $1.75 to Lewis. This makes a total bounty of $3.50
captured by Lewis in this session's skirmishes.
No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall
have $0.56 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $218.45 in prizes
this season. Click
here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.
The next session (22 February) shall feature the following contests:
•Special Letter Bingo Contest - Week Eight
- This week's "Special Letter" is "N".
Any Bingo beginning with the letter "N"
will earn one point. In addition, one point will be awarded for each additional
occurrence of the "Special Letter" within the word. Click
here for rules and current standings
•A Walk In the Washington Woods Contest - On
February 22nd, 1732, George Washington was born in Westmoreland County,
Virginia. Many people remember George as the first President of the United
States, Father of our Country, the guy on the quarter and the dollar bill,
etc. But George is also the kid who chopped down his father's cherry tree
and bravely owned up to it. In honor of this occasion, a quarter of dues
collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns in the
highest scoring play of a word pertaining to trees, foreign or domestic,
useful or just a pain in the ASH. (e.g. CATALPA, HEMLOCK, TIMBERS, BOOJUMS,
STATELY, THORNIER, GINKGOS, CINNAMON, LARCHES, ACACIAS, REDWOOD, KAURIES,
SAWMILL, JUNIPER, LOGJAMS, MAHOGANY, SYCAMORE, LEAFIER, MULBERRY, HAMMOCK,
DOGWOOD, NEEDLES, MAGNOLIA, HABITAT, COCOBOLA, FORESTS, KABIKIS, WOODLAND,
CHERRIES, WALNUTS, ELMIEST, etc.) To qualify for this contest, you must
write a sentence that clearly connects your word to trees in some fashion.
Make the connection and, who knows, your entry might just bear fruit.
•SO, You Want OS to Enter Your Contest? -
A quarter of dues collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player
who turns in the highest scoring play of a word beginning or ending with
either the letters "SO" or the letters "OS" (e.g. SODALITE,
OSCULATE, VIRTUOSO, RUBABOOS,
SONANCE, OSPREYS, ESPRESSO,
BACALAOS, SOWBELLY, GENTOOS,
etc.) Designating a blank as an "S" or an "O" counts
the same as playing the actual tile. SOMEBODY should
be able to come up with tiles APROPOS to this occasion.
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $2.43
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $0.56 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus
