Session Notes - 14 December 2006 Session

This session marked the sixth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!

We enjoyed the company of visitor Dan Byrne, making his annual visit to the Tucson area from Lancaster, California and were joined by 5 players who played 12 games in which we scored 9,100 points for a 758.3333 (379.1667 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 31 recorded bingos we played, none were phonies that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two contests this session. The first was the This One is for the Birds Contest for the highest scoring "Bird" play. There were two entries submitted. Ed Saunders came up with COLIN for 20 points (COLIN - The Bobwhite [colinus virginianus] - National Audubon Society Field Guide to Birds - Western Region, "The Northern Bobwhite is mainly an eastern and Mexican bird but is often found in the foothills of the southern Rocky Mountains. After the breeding season, these birds live together in a covey, huddling together at night and in cold weather. When danger threatens, they fly out in every direction, startling the would-be predator, who often catches none of the birds.").

Dan Byrne provided the winner, though. His 25 point play of CHAT takes the prize (National Audubon Society Field Guide to Birds - Western Region, "The Yellow - Breasted CHAT is an atypical wood warbler. Its large size and stout bill, long tail, and distinctive display flight, hovering with slow, deep-flapping wings and dangling feet, make it seem more like one of the mockingbirds or thrashers. Since it prefers brushy tangles and is relatively shy, it is more often heard than seen.").

The second was the High Powered Contest, awarded to the highest scoring play of a word beginning with any of the five "Power Tiles", J, K, Q, X, or Z. Josh Kassel not only tried to put his name on this contest, he actually did so, playing JOSH for 30 points. Ed Saunders bested that with JAUNTS for 31 points, but Lewis Saul dropped QUARE for 41 points to win the money.

Dan and Lewis take home $3.75 each.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.93 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $94.95 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.

The next session (21 December) shall feature the following contests:
Hoover/Boulder Dam Contest - On December 21, 1928, President Calvin Coolidge signed the Boulder Canyon Project Act which authorized the building of Hoover Dam (also called Boulder Dam) in northwest Arizona. In honor of this momentous occasion, we will award a quarter of dues collected to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of any Mineral or rock-related word (for Boulder Dam) or anything, such as a "vacuum" maybe, used for household cleaning (for Hoover Dam). To qualify for this contest, you must use the word in a sentence that clearly connects the word to either of these two categories. Be creative, if you can make the connection, you might get an unexpected gift this year.
Happy Holidays Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa.
To qualify for this contest, you must use the word in a sentence that connects the word to one of these holidays. Be creative and you might take home the prize.
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $4.67 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $2.24 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $13.26 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $9.83 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
