Session Notes - 07 June 2007 Session
IMPORTANT!!!. . . .Adjustment to club schedule!!!. . . .Due to a variety of reasons, there will be no one available to run club # 565 on June 28th or July 5th. Therefore there will be no club meetings on those two dates. Please mark this on your calendars. Club will resume play as usual on July 12th.
This session marked the thirty-first of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!
Nathan Benedict made his first appearance of the season tonight and sprinted
away with top honors for the week, going 6-0, +679, 15 bingos and a 477.1667
points-per-game average for the six games.
We were joined by 4 players who played 12 games in which we scored 9,705 points for an 808.75 (404.375 ind) point-per-game average. All of the winning scores and three of the losing scores were over 400 points. Of the 44 recorded bingos we played, none were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
- High Game - 522 points by Nathan Benedict
- Low Win - 400 points by Nathan Benedict
- High Loss - 439 points by Morgan Gilbert (Opponent at 484)
- Bingo King - Nathan Benedict for averaging 2.5000 bingos per game

- An Embarrassing Moment With Lessons to be Learned
Lewis Saul pulled a classic blunder in his game with Nathan Benedict.
Opening the game with a nice bingo of ENTERIC
and hitting the clock, he was surprised to hear Nathan call "Hold".
. . .until he looked down and saw that he had placed the bingo one row
too low and had missed the center square completely. An embarrassing moment,
to be sure.
But what are the lessons, you ask?
#1. Rule I-E (Missing the Center Square) reads " If the first word does not cover the center square, the opponent may challenge the play off the board, regardless of its acceptability. If not challenged, it is scored without the Double Word Score bonus earned on an opening play. The center square remains as a DWS usable on a later play."
#2. This means that Nathan could challenge ENTERIC off the board and either make a play or exchange to improve his rack. The pitfall of this is that Lewis still has a playable bingo (which has some great hook letters and can also form an eight-letter bingo with any of 11 different letters) on his rack. It's likely that Lewis is going to play a bingo on his next play, anyway.
#3. Nathan could also choose to accept the play (which he did) and take advantage of the board to counteract Lewis' bingo to the fullest degree possible.
For instance, the open DWS at the center of the board opens up the truly unique possibility of a Triple-Double play from the center square to the TWS at 15H. The missed center square is the only scenario in which that possibility exists.
He also has the possibility of using one of Lewis' letters to make a countering eight-letter bingo play. (which he did, playing DIVINERS from a rack that contained no playable sevens.)
#4. So, by assessing the board situation, accepting the play and borrowing a letter for his own bingo, Nathan finished the first play roughly even rather than a bingo down.

week. Ed Saunders still holds a commanding lead with 3 weeks to go. Lewis
Saul moved into sole possession of second place and Karen Lundeen hangs
on to a slim one point lead for the third spot.
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first regular contest was the Funny Pages Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to comic books or comic strips. Nathan Benedict came up with "V" for VENDETTA is a popular "graphic novel". which is snob-speak for "comic book". (63 points) Ed Saunders backed the winner though, with his submission of "He-Man and the MASTERS of the Universe have conquered Toyland, Television, the Comix, and are on their way to a theater near you." (86 points)
The second regular contest was the Compound It! Contest for the highest scoring play of a compound word. In this contest, the roles were reversed with Ed submitting OXEYE for 30 points and Nathan flying high with JETLINER for 65 points and the easy win.
Nathan and Ed both fly away home with $2.50.
Lewis Saul quivered in anticipation as Ed Saunders stayed away from his
bingo line and Lewis was able to lay down QUIVERED for 114 points and the
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot and its accompanying $0.75 prize.
No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $316.84 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.

•Special Letter Bingo Contest - Week twenty-four
- This week's "Special Letter" is "V".
Any Bingo beginning with the letter "V"
will earn one point. In addition, one point will
be awarded for each additional occurrence of the "Special Letter"

• Flag Day Contest - On June 14, 1777, the
Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. In 1916, President
Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation declaring June 14th to
be Flag Day. In honor of these events, a quarter of dues collected (less
50 cents) shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word either
containing the letters FLAG in any order or being the name of any governmental,
national or state symbol. (e.g. FLAGELLA, RAFFLING, POTATOES, SUNSHINE,
PEACHES, FOLIAGE, CONGRESS, PENTAGON, etc.) . To qualify for this contest,
you need to write a sentence verifying any "iffy" symbol in some
manner. If you can make the connection, it might symbolize a change in your
finances.
•Love Your Pets Contest -A quarter of dues
collected (less 50 cents) shall be awarded to the player who turns in the
highest scoring play of a word that is the name of an animal one might realistically
have as a pet. (e.g. TURTLES, PUPPIES, FERRETS, IGUANAS, HAMSTER, COCKATOO,
KITTENS, PARAKEET, LABRADOR, SAMOYED, OCELOTS, CHICKEN, MONKEYS, etc.).
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $6.35
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $11.21 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $6.91 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
