This session marked the fifth of NSA Club #565's 2006-2007 season!
We welcomed visitors Allen Jacobson (Paonia, Colorado) and Sandra Masel (Melbourne, Australia) for their first visits to Club # 565 and were joined by 9 players who played 25 games in which we scored 18,955 points for a 758.2 (379.1 ind) point-per-game average. Of the 64 recorded bingos we played, 3 were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two contests this session. The first was the Pearl Harbor Contest
awarded to the highest scoring play of a word that can be associated with
either Harbors or the state of Hawaii. We had three entries for the contest.
Judith Whitcomb submitted both "HONESTLY, wouldn't you rather be in
Hawaii now? (84) (this entry was disqualified because it did not establish
a connection between the word HONESTLY and either of the categories) and
"The CLIMATE in Oahu is fantastic." (77) Ed Saunders submitted
"The STEAMER cut through the placid waters of New York Harbor en route
to Ellis Island and a bright new future for those aboard." (77) Normally,
since one of the entries was mine, I would pawn this off on an impartial
judge, but I figure that if I did a "Word Association" test with
a group of people and said "Harbors", very few people would come
up with the word "STEAMER". If I said the word "Hawaii"
to the same group of people, I'm pretty sure that "CLIMATE" or
"weather" would be among the predominant responses. The $5.25
prize goes to Judith for CLIMATE.
The second was the High Verb Contest, awarded to the highest scoring play
of a verb in any of its forms. We had five entries for this one with Ed
Saunders' play of JAVELINS (to pierce with a Javelin- a light spear) for
91 points taking home the $5.25 prize.
No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.31 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $87.45 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2006-2007 season.
The next session (14 December) shall feature the following contests:
•This One is for the Birds Contest - December
14th marks the beginning of the Audubon Society's Annual Christmas Bird
Count. In honor of this undertaking we will award a quarter of dues collected
to the highest scoring "Bird" play. To qualify for this contest
you must note the play and the score at the bottom of your scorecard. Bird
names ( e.g. WHIMBREL, CURLEWS, TAKAHES, APTERYX) automatically qualify.
Any "Bird-related" plays you make must be accompanied by a sentence
connecting the word played to the subject of birds.
•High Powered Contest - A quarter of dues collected
shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of
a word beginning with any of the 5 "Power Tiles" J, K, Q, X, or
Z (e.g. JANIZARY, KNOUTING, QUINNAT, XANTHIC, ZOISITE, etc.). To qualify
for this contest you must actually play the Power tile. Designating a blank
as a power tile or extending a previously played Power tile word does not
count.
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.74
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $12.33 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $8.90 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
