This was the 1st session of the 2005 - 2006 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by six players who played 20 games in which we scored 15,284 points for a 764.2 point-per-game average. Of the 60 recorded bingos we played, o6 were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 548 points by Lewis Saul
Low Win - 321 points by Naurlene Canterman
High Loss - 448 points by Naurlene Canterman (Opponent at 459)
Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.125 bingos per game
Deja vu - Two relatively uncommon words reared their heads in this session. Naurlene Canterman saw the word YANQUI played against her twice this session: First by Ed Saunders and again by Joshua Kassel. And in their own game, Ed played BLIN, followed by Josh playing the same word the very next turn (Josh notes it really was his best available play).
Nongo Worth Noting - Ed Saunders found himself with the rack ABHMSY? in his game against Monique Kornell. He was prepared to front hook the existing word WAT with the S when Monique closed down the only available bingo line on the board. His word? MAYBUSH.
As this was the first session of the 2005-2006 season, we had two contests in that theme. The first was for the highest opening play of a game. Ed Saunders played a colorful ORANGEY for 78 points but was bested by Naurlene Canterman's 80 point play CIRCLED. The second contest was for the highest scoring 1st play of the game for the player who went second. Several folks turned in entries:
- ORDINARY by Naurlene Canterman for 65 points
- LANOLIN by Ed Saunders for 64 points
- ZITIS by Joshua Kassel for 48 points
But it was Karen Lundeen's radiant play of RADIANT for 69 points that took the prize. Both Karen and Naurlene take home $4.00.
Lewis Saul started out the season by turning in a Triple-Triple play and winning the $3.55 prize for doing so with a 149 point play of ORGANDIE. Ed Saunders played a Q and won the 100+ Point Play Jackpot with a 104 point play of QUARTETS, which wins him $2.05. The other progressive prizes were not won, and 1.12 shall be added to each. Finally, we started out the "Twice Around the Alphabet Bingo Contest" with six plaayers scoring points. At the start of the contest, Ed Saunders and Naurlene Canterman are tied for 1st place. For complete standings and rules, click here. As of this session, we have payed out $13.60 in prizes for the 2005-2006 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (17 November) shall feature the following contests:
- High Win Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player with the highest scoring winning game.
- OUT Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player with the highest scoring play of a word beginning with OUT (e.g., OUTGRIN, OUTLAYS, etc.). To qualify for this contest, you must play the actual O-U-T tiles; extending a previously-played "OUT" word does not count.
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
- Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $4.11 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
- 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.05 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
- Twice Around the Alphabet Bingo Contest - This session's "Twice Around the Alphabet Bingo Contest" letters are C and D. Every bingo you play beginning with C or D scores you points. For standings and rules, click here.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
