This was the 20th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by 9 players, who played a total of 24 games in which we scored 18,159 points for a 756.6 point-per-game average. Of the 61 recorded bingos we played, 5 were phonies that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 495 points by Ed Sommer
Low Win - 328 points by Naurlene Canterman
High Loss - 461 points by Ed Saunders
Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.33 bingos per game
Bingo Deja Vous - Robert Whitcomb for playing TERRINES and RENTIERS, which are anagrams of each other.
Bungo Alert - Nathan Benedict notes he played a bubgo, which is when one plays phony by misdesignating a blank. he played ENNUYES* instead of ENNUYEE, misdesignating the last tile -- a blank -- as an S rather than an E.
Some interesting bingos:
- ANGINOSE \adj. Characteristic of angina (played by Nathan Benedict)
- JAEGERS \n pl. Hunters
(played by Ed Saunders)
- MERINOS \n pl. Fine Wools
(played by Lewis Saul)
- PICRATES \n pl. Chemical Salts (played by Ed Saunders)
We held a special contest this session in honor of Jason Sommer, who was in attendance on the eve of his 60th birthday. In honor of this auspicious event, we gave a $5.00 prize to any player who made a play of 60 points, or as close to it as possible. Naurlene Canterman almost hit it with a 59 point play of BLINDEST, and Ed Saunders went over the mark with a 62 point play of MEANINGS, but Nathan nailed a 60 point play of VEX and wins the prize. Congrats Nathan, and happy birthday Jason!
Naurlene missed the birthday prize, but she did pick up the Low Win contest for turning in the lowest winning score of the session with a 328 point victory. The other contest of the evening was the TWS/DLS Contest for the highest-scoring play made covering the Triple Word Score and Double Letter Score bonus tiles simultaneously. The winner of this prize was... nobody! Although this play is a common one, nobody recorded an entry on a scorecard, and this prize went unclaimed. As a reminder, folks, write down all entries for contests we are running; they could be worth cash for you. Naurlene takes home $6.25, and the TWS/DLS Contest will roll over to next session.
This session also featured the letter P in the ongoing Alphabet Bingo Contest in which all bingos starting with an "P" scored a point. Three players turned in bingos starting with P, and Nathan Benedict remains in 1st place, with Ed Saunders running second.Click here for Alphabet Bingo standings and rules!
Two of the four progressive jackpots were taken. Josh Kassel won the 9+ Bingo Progressive jackopt with 9-letter phony of OUTHOPING* -- which wins hm $14.04. The 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot was hit three times with three separate plays of over 100 points. Naurlene played EXTENDS for 127 points, Ed played JAEGERS for 104, and Lewis Saul played HONKIES for 103. Although only $1.68 split three ways, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. As of this session, we have payed out $471.00 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (31 March) shall feature the following contests:
- "TLS/DWS " Contest - ~A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play made using both a Triple Letter Score and a Double Word Score bonus square played at the same time.
- High Loss - ~A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player with the highest losing score.
- "TWS/DLS " Contest - $6.25 shall be awarded to the highest scoring play made using both a Triple Word Score and a Double Letter Score bonus square played at the same time.
Alphabet Bingo Contest - The Alphabet Bingo Letter for this session is Q. Each bingo beginning with Q scores one point (click here for standings and rules)
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $1.68 plus an eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - An eighth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
