This was the 10th session of the 2004 - 2005 Season of National Scrabble Association Club #565!
We were joined by 13 players who played a total of 33 games in which we scored 23,969 points for a 726.2 point-per-game average. Of the 74 recorded bingos we played, four were phonies that went unchallenged. We were also happy to welcome back Yusupha Jow, who has not played at club for some time.
Some numbers and whatnot for this session include:
High Game - 557 points by Bob Yarmchuk
Low Win - 294 points by Judith Whitcomb
High Loss - 391 points by Robert Whitcomb
Bingo King - Nathan Benedict for averaging 1.857 bingos per game
Bingo Coincidence - SEQUOIA is one of three bingos that contain all
5 vowels and a low-probability bingo to boot. This session saw it twice: once
by Naurlene Canterman (SEQUOIA for 85 points) and once by Ed Saunders (SEQUOIAS
for 64 points).
Some interesting bingos:
- BARQUES \n pl. Sailing vessels (played by Judith
Whitcomb)
- DECIARE \n. A metric unit of area (played by Monique
Kornell)
- ETHIONS \n pl. Pesticides (played by Robert Whitcomb,
which figures seeing that he is an entomologist)
- FOWLINGS \n pl. The huntings of birds (played
by Karen Lundeen)
- GAVOTTES \v. Dances the French dance, the gavot
(played by Ed Saunders)
- HECTORS \n pl. Bullies (played by Nathan Benedict)
- PINDERS \n pl. Officials who formerly impounded
stray animals (played by Joshua Kassel)
- SORINGS \n pl. Practices of making a horse's foot
sore in order to encourage high stepping (played by Bob Yarmchuk)
For the 6th straight week in a row, Bob Yarmchuk is in the money. He took the High Game contest with a 557 point game, one of four games we saw this session above 500 points. The second contest was the All Vowels/All Consonants Contest for the highest-scoring word containing all vowels or all consonants. Your absentminded director, Josh, did specify that the letter Y could not count as a vowel in this contest. He did not have the acuity to say that it couldn't be a consonant, either (sigh). Naurlene Canterman takes this contest with a 38 point play of XYST. Both Bob and Naurlene take home $9.25 prizes.
This session also featured the letter F in the ongoing Alphabet Bingo Contest in which all bingos starting with an "F" scored a point. Five folks scored in this contest. Nathan Benedict is still in the lead, with Monique Kornell and Joshua Kassel ties for second. Click here for Alphabet Bingo standings and rules!
None of the four progressive jackpots was taken this session, and all shall have $2.43 added to them. As of this session, we have payed out $213.79 in prizes for the 2004-2005 season. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The next session (20 January) shall feature the following contests:
- Low Win - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to
the player who turns in the lowest winning score.
- Any Letter But S Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall
be awarded to the player who makes the highest-scoring play by playing any
single letter except for the letter S (or a blank designated as an S) in a
turn.
Alphabet Bingo Contest - The Alphabet Bingo Letter for this
session is G. Each bingo beginning with G scores one point (click
here for standings and rules)
- Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $8.42 plus an eighth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple
play.
- 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $2.43 plus an eighth of the
session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points
in a single play
- Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $4.67 plus an eighth of the
session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points
in a single game.
- 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $10.10 plus an eighth of the
session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more
letters in length.
