Session Notes:
This was session number 35 for the season. 16 players competed in a total of 34 games in which 24,561 points were scored for an overall average of722 points per game, or 361 points per player per game. Of the 70 bingos played this session, only 2 -- a surprisingly small number -- were phonies that went unchallenged.

We welcomed Joseph Alvarez, who joined us for the first time. Joseph is brand new to organized Scrabble, and we hope he becomes as addicted to the game as the rest of us. Hopefully we will see more of Joseph in future sessions.

Bob Whitcomb made an unscheduled mid-summer appearance in Arizona to do some work on a book. Having his priorities straight, he was able to escape to play Scrabble and nabbed the top spot for the session by turning in a perfect 3-0 scorecard as well as playing the best bingo of the night: THIOUREA, which is only one of seventeen 8-letter bingos containing all 5 vowels. Bob may or may not be in next session, but we'll see more of him again once the summer is over. Mere mortals tremble as Nathan Benedict is back from his summer hiatus in (among other places) Spain, California, and Nevada. Nathan will be spending his semester at the U of A's College of Law and doubtlessly teaching us the more obscure bingos in existence. Welcome back!

Bingo King this session was Nathan Benedict, with 15 bingos in six games. Also, Monique Kornell and Naurlene Canterman turned in a relatively rare tie game. This session featured a Preposition Contest for the highest-scoring play that contained a preposition. Only two folks recorded entries, and the prize goes to Nathan Benedict for a 44-point play that contained the standalone preposition TO. Our 400 Contest for the player who scored a game closest to 400 points was close, but Naurlene Canterman wins it with a 399-point game. Both these contests are worth $6, a heck of a lot better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

The Jackpots are still up for grabs! Another week passed without anyone scoring a Triple-Triple play, and the Triple-Triple Jackpot is now at  $33.75. The 9+ Bingo Jackpot and the "Deja Bingo" Jackpot also remained unclaimed. Both Jackpots are now at $3.38. The Alphabet Bingo contest featured the letter K, and for the second week in a row nobody scored any points. Ed Saunders is still in 1st place with , and Ed Saunders remains in 1st place with 10 points.

Next Session (24 July) will feature the following contests:
- Low Win - A prize will be awarded to the player who plays the lowest-scoring winning game.  (~a quarter of dues collected)

- Food Contest - A prize will be awarded to the highest-scoring play that contains a word that is a food (e.g., STEAK, POTATO, SPINACH, etc.). To qualify for this prize, you must form the entire "food word." Pluralizing an existing food word does not count, but creating a food word by extending onto a non-food word (e.g., extending a previously-played MAR to form MARINARA) does count. (~a quarter of dues collected).
- Triple-Triple Jackpot - A jackpot of $33.75 plus an eighth of the evening's dues will be awarded to any player(s) who scores a Triple-Triple Play.
- 9+ Bingo Jackpot
- A jackpot of $3.38 plus a portion of the evening's dues will be awarded to any player(s) who scores a bingo containing nine or more letters.
"Deja Bingo" Jackpot - A jackpot of $3.38 plus a portion of the evening's dues will be awarded to any player(s) who plays the same bingo more than once in a session.
- Alphabet Bingo
- The Alphabet Bingo letter for this session is "L." For each bingo you play that begins with the letter L, you score one point. ($26 Jackpot)
