Session Notes:
Fourteen
players attended this last session of 2002. Happy New Year to all. May 2003
be happy, prosperous, and see you draw all the S's and blanks in the bag.
Two new players
attended last night: Vic Kaye and Betty Nash. Betty wandered in after reading
about the Scrabble scene in the paper. Vic comes to us fresh off the boat
from Chicago as a new Tucson resident. We were also happy to see the return
of Jeannette Kaufman who returns to us after a two month absence. Welcome
all!
Monique Kornell
was top dog last night with a 4-1 +143 score card. Ed Saunders was bingo
king, turning in eight bingos in four games. Ed also captured the prize for
high game with a 502-pointer. The prize for the highest-scoring vowel dump
(using four or more vwels) goes to Judith Whitcomb for an 82 point play of
ERASION/ODE/EX. She also played the second highest
vowel dump (EXUDATE for 79 points); Richard Fields played the third
highest vowel dump with AVERAGE for 72.
Nobody played
a Triple-Triple, and the cash prize for doing so now stands at $13.75. Also,
nobody played a bingo of nine or more letters, and the pot for that acheivement
now stands at $5.75.
Next
session (2 January) will feature prizes for:
- Highest game (a quarter of dues collected)
- Triple-Triple plays ($13.75 plus an eighth of dues collected)
- 9+ Bingos ($5.75 plus an eighth of dues collected)
- NEW YEAR play. The highest-scoring word that uses either
the tiles NEW or YEAR will receive a prize (e.g., AWAKEN,
INKWELL, JARVEYS, SYNURAE,
etc.). In order to qualify for this prize,
you must actually play all three of the N-E-W tiles
or all four of the Y-E-A-R tiles (a quarter of
dues collected).
