Session Notes - May 16, 2013 Session

This session marked the fortieth week of NASPA Club #565 (Thursday Night Scrabble Club)'s 2012-2013 season!

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 30 games in which we scored 12,007 points for a 400.2333 point-per-game average. Of the 50 recorded bingos we played, three were phoneys that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix. This week's contests were from the club archives.

We had 7 paid players this week.

The first regular contest was the Go Fly A Kittiwake Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a bird. Foreign birds were the rule in this contest with Monique Kornell scoring 16 pts for TUI (a bird of New Zealand), Ed Saunders scored 65 for ESERINE (a SERIN is a European finch) but Peter Stokes found a way to get paid by the piper as he scored 122 pts and the $5.25 prize with PUREEING (a REE is the female of a Eurasian Sandpiper).

The second was the "SH" We're Having A Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that contains the letter couplet "SH", in that order, somewhere within it. Monique Kornell respectfully played SHRI (used as a Hindu title of respect) for 29 pts but Richard Fields quieted the competition with 34 pts for SH to grab the $5.25 payoff.

Peter Stokes made a 122 pt smoothie with his Triple Triple PUREEING and pulled $6.72 from the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot. Peter wrapped his ?EGINRU rack (6 sevens and 52 eights possible) around an "E" hanging in the 5th position between two TWS squares.

Richard Fields added to his earnings for the night with $1.31 from the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot for his 100 pt phoney exiters*.

Travis Carlson took $2.24 from the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot as he played his ?DGIOTU rack (0 sevens, 3 eights, and 21 nines possible with that rack) to an existing "ES" couplet on the board to score 74 pts for OUTGUIDES.

The other Progressive Jackpot went unclaimed this week and $1.31 will be added to it next session. We have paid out $359.32 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2012-2013 season.

Next session's contests are from the club archives.
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (May 23, 2013) shall feature the following contests:
Show Me The Money Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some form of legal tender or currency (e.g. DRACHMS, PATACAS, DALASIS, reCENTly, SATANGS, PFENNIG, TAMBALA, FARTHING, TUPPENCE, etc.)
Exercise Your Options Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some sort of exercise or athletic endeavor (e.g. DEADLIFT, SCULLING, BIATHLON, VAULTING, PUSHUPS, CLIMBING, PRESSES, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
