Session Notes - July 22, 2010 Session

This session marked the forty-seventh week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed first-time club player Loren Pruzin to club this week. Loren has played a bit on ISC and we adopted his ISC rating as his initial club rating. Loren fit right into the group and we thoroughly enjoyed his company. We're looking forward to seeing him often at future sessions.

There were no games played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 9 players who played 52 games in which we scored 19,134 points for a 367,9615 point-per-game average. Of the 59 recorded bingos we played, 2 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Travis Carlson returned from a rare week off to claim top honors this week. Travis went 5-1 + 193 pts

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The first was The Monsoon, Nonsoon Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a weather related form, condition, or feature. Monique Kornell felt a 21 pt draft of AIR, Loren Mitchel's weather systems seemed to be in a 32 pt state of FLUX, Travis Carlson told the HOTelmen that his room was hotter than the 70 he scored, Roger Wiens wasn't cowed by the 72 pts worth of air in his dAIRies, Sarah Jacobson's skies were CLOUDIER (74), Naurlene Canterman's skies were a bit LIGHTERs (86), but Ed Saunders blew a cold wind on his opposition with WINTRIEST for 90 pts and the $6.00 prize.

The second was the Gimme Shelter Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a manmade or natural shelter or domicile. Monique Kornell staked her claim with 21 pts for laTENT, Naurlene Canterman got 24 for DENim, Loren Mitchel stretched out a TARP for 30, but Travis Carlson went indoors with the help of his local HOTELmen and booked 70 pts to win the $6.00 prize.

Naurlene Canterman had a rack of ADEHLS? (16 possible 7s) when her opponent left an "S" hanging in the 7th spot between two TWS squares. Naurlene saw and played one of the three possible 3x3s available to her (you can only play one of 'em no matter how many there are) with HAnDLESS for 158 pts and the $4.50 in the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot.

Ed Saunders rode 4 bingos (GLEANERS, ESCAPED, HEARINGS, and COONTIE) and five other plays worth 30 pts or more to a strong 577 pt game and claimed the $3.00 in the Club 565 Progressive Jackpot.

Loren Mitchel and Ed Saunders split the 9+Bingo Progressive Jackpot with bingos played against each other in the same game. Loren had a rack of DEGIRW? (four 7s in that rack) but noticed a hanging "ON" combo and played WONDERInG down to a TWS to win $0.75 and score 92 pts. A couple of plays later, Ed worked his EIRSTW? rack (fourteen 7s in that rack) around a hanging "IN combo to play WIntRIEST for 90 pts and his $0.75 share of the Jackpot.

No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpot this week and $1.50 shall be added to it. We have paid out $913.43 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

This week's contests are from the mind of Ed Saunders. Thanks, Ed!
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (July 29, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
'At'sa My Bud! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, a word that designates someone as a friend or close companion (e.g. GOOMBAH, PALomino, HONEYBUN, PARDNER, COMPADRE, PIGSNEY, TEAMMATE, BUDdleia, CHUMming, SIDEKICK, MATEriel, etc.).
I Hate "L"s Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word that begins or ends with the letter "L" (e.g. LORGNON, FORESTAL, LIMEKILN, STOICAL, LINALOOL, LIRIOPES, PICKEREL, MILFOIL, STRONGYL, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $3.00 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
